Privacy and Data Policy

This document explains the data this site collects, what your information is used for, and what happens to it when you leave the site.

This page was last updated in February 2026 after I switched from Beam Analytics to GoatCounter.

Aside from basic analytics and newsletter sign-ups explained below, I do not use services or software that track you or collect your personal data. This includes not using Google’s font API. The site is managed using the static site generator Jekyll and deployed via a private Github repo.

Newsletter: I use EmailOctopus to send emails. The email address you give EmailOctopus is saved by EmailOctopus. I view subscriber email addresses and newsletter open rates using their web interface. I keep an encrypted backup file of subscriber email addresses locally and on Apple’s iCloud service. I update that file once a month.

Website Analytics: I use GoatCounter, an open-source, cookie-free analytics service that is GDPR and CCPA compliant. Its servers are located at Hetzner Online GmbH in Finland and Germany. When you visit my site, you automatically send me information about your operating system, browser, language, screen size, and the site you’re coming from. GC collects this data, as well as your IP address and country and region. This data is stored in memory on your computer for up to eight hours. GC does not store IP addresses, header information, or tracking IDs on its servers. It does not store information in your browser using cookies, localStorage, cache, or other methods. Youtube: I embed Youtube videos using the “nocookie” method. Youtube will not use cookies to track the videos you watch.
